Even in retirement, Wayne Gretzky can still set records.
The Great One’s 1979 O-Pee-Chee rookie card sold for $1.29 million Thursday night, setting a record for the most expensive hockey card ever. It was the sixth card to sell for $1 million or more.
The card is graded a Gem Mint 10 by PSA and there’s only two of its kind in the world.

Gretzky Wayne played for Edmonton Oilers for ten years and later traded to LA Kings. He held a record with 2857 points with 894 goals and 1963 assists during his NHL career. His 1979 O-Pee-Chee rookie card was sold for $1.29 million and became among the only six hockey cards sold for over $1 million. At Heritage Auctions, where it was sold, it was graded a Gem Mint 10 by PSA, making it the second card of its kind. According to Heritage, there are only two highly graded Gretzky cards in the world. O-Pee-Chee originally distributed cards cut using wires and therefore rough edges.
